The 1983/84 season of the ice hockey Bundesliga was the 26th season of the highest German ice hockey league . The German champions became the Cologne EC , who defeated the defending champion EV Landshut in the final series and thus celebrated his third German championship title. Since both the ECD Iserlohn and the ten-time champions SC Riessersee were able to assert themselves in the relegation series, but only three years after the last title win, there was no sporting relegation this season. However, since the ERC Freiburg was refused the license for the following season for financial reasons , the EHC Essen-West was able to move up in third place in the relegation to the Bundesliga.

Due to the Olympic ice hockey tournament in Sarajevo, there were also significant changes in the play-off mode this season .

mode

Due to the Olympic Winter Games in Sarajevo in February, for which the German national team was able to qualify, there were considerable changes in the play-off mode in the Bundesliga season 1983/84 . Due to the German participation in the Olympic tournament, the season had to be interrupted, so that after the double round there was a break of several weeks in play. However, this meant a considerable disadvantage for the top teams in the ice hockey Bundesliga, which were disadvantaged by the wear and tear of the national players and had to get back together as a team after a break of several weeks. At the same time, the weaker teams were able to use the break to optimally prepare for the play-offs through training and friendly matches.

The German Ice Hockey Federation then decided to hold group games instead of the quarter-finals in order to give the top teams some time and games to regain their position. The best eight teams in the double round initially played in two groups of four teams each. The first two in each group qualified for the semi-finals, which, like the finals, were held in the “ best of five ” mode. The rule was not undisputed that for the advantage of being able to play the last decisive game on one's own ice, not the placement in the double round, but the placement in the group games was decisive. In particular, the Mannheim ERC protested against this principle at the DEB.

There was also a change in the games for 3rd place and 5th to 8th place. They were no longer played in the " best-of-three " mode , but according to the European Cup rule, ie in a two-way leg with the goal difference taken into account. In terms of promotion and relegation, the direct promotion of the second division champions was abolished again. Like the second, third and fourth placed in the 2nd Bundesliga , the champion had to go into relegation, in which the ninth and tenth placed in the 1st Bundesliga also took part. The number of participants in the relegation round increased to six teams. The first two of the relegation qualified for the upcoming first division season.

On the one hand, the new play-off mode fulfilled its goal of giving the top teams some time to warm up. The results showed that the strong teams actually had play deficits at the beginning, but in the end three of the four first-place winners in the double round prevailed, only SB Rosenheim was eliminated against the worse-placed ESV Kaufbeuren . However, the audience's expectations were not fulfilled, so that the old mode was largely returned to in the following season.

Transfers

With Erich Weißhaupt , one of the dominant goalkeepers moved from Mannheim to Düsseldorf, where he replaced Helmut De Raaf , his substitute in the national team who moved to Cologne. There he replaced Sigmund Suttner , who moved to the newly promoted Freiburg together with defenders Mike Ford and Jörg Hiemer . The vacant goalkeeper position in Mannheim occupied Beppo Schlickenrieder , who came from Füssen together with Franz Jüttner from relegated. Andreas Niederberger was brought to Mannheim from EC Bad Tölz to replace Rainer Blum who had gone to Rosenheim . Otherwise, Rosenheim relied on young talent and brought in Axel Kammerer and Georg Franz from EHC Straubing from Bad Tölz . With Rainer Lutz from Kaufbeuren, a young Bavarian defender moved again to Düsseldorfer EG, who also brought in Peter-John Lee , an NHL- experienced striker. Defender Joachim Reil , national player from Riessersee, moved to Iserlohn, where Paul Messier, the older brother of NHL star Mark Messier , had been signed. In Schwenningen they had signed Danny Held, a German-Canadian who had tried to make the leap into the NHL for two years in the American Hockey League after his commitment in the 1980/81 season at the Berlin Ice Skating Club. Landshut had to cope with the departure of the Laycock brothers Bob and Robin and signed the Polish Henryk Pytel .
