Peter Zankl (born May 24, 1961 in Straubing ) is a former German ice hockey goalkeeper .

Career

Zankl started playing ice hockey in his hometown Straubing when he was ten. After he was initially active as a field player, he played in the student team of TSV Straubing for the first time in the goalkeeping position. As a teenager he was appointed to the German junior national team several times, in 1981 he took part in the U20 World Cup with the junior national team.

In 1979 the goalkeeper was in the squad for the second division team of TSV Straubing for the first time . For the 1981/82 season Zankl moved to VfL Bad Nauheim in the Bundesliga . After Bad Nauheim was insolvent after the season and stopped playing, Zankl accepted an offer from the Cologne EC . During his time in Bad Nauheim, he was part of the German national team for the first time. He played in Cologne from 1982 to 1985, but was mostly only second goalkeeper behind Sigmund Suttner and later Helmut de Raaf . With the Haien, Zankl became German champions in the 1983/84 season . From 1985 on, the Bavarian was between the posts at Eintracht Frankfurt . In his first season 1985/86 he was promoted to the Bundesliga with unity, in which he guarded the Frankfurt goal until 1990. From 1990 to 1994 Zankl was under contract with EC Hedos Munich . For Munich he was on the ice for four years in the Bundesliga, in his last season 1993/94 the goalkeeper celebrated his second German championship with Hedos.

After the championship title, Zankl returned to his home club EHC Straubing in the third-class 1st League South. After he only played rarely at first, he was again a regular goalkeeper from 1995. For the EHC, he represented a secure support through his experience. After the 1997/98 season, Zankl ended his active career. He stayed at EHC Straubing as a junior coach. He also worked for many years in the management of the EHC.
