Helmut Steiger (born January 5, 1959 in Landshut ) is a former German ice hockey player . During his playing days he won four German championships and played for the German national team for a long time .

Career

Helmut Steiger started ice hockey at EV Landshut from his hometown. After playing in all youth teams there, he received his first appearances in the ice hockey Bundesliga for the EVL in the 1976/77 season . In his second season in the Bundesliga he became one of the best scorers in the league (10th place after the preliminary round). In the following years he further established himself as one of the best players in the league. In 1981/82 he finished again in tenth place on the scorer list. A year later he celebrated his greatest success with the EVL, when they defeated the Mannheim ERC in the final of the play-offs and won the German championship. In 1983/84 Steiger achieved a new personal record of scorer points (fourth place after the preliminary round, top scorer in the play-offs) and received the Xaver-Nonsense trophy as the player with the most assists, but in the end only the runner-up was achieved.

After another year in Landshut, Steiger decided in 1985 to switch to the Cologne EC . In the following three years in Cologne he won three championships with the Haien. In 1986/87 he was elected to the league's all-star team for the third time after 1983 and 1984. In 1991 and 1993 he reached the finals with the KEC, but where they were inferior to the Düsseldorfer EG . When the DEL was founded in 1994, Steiger moved back to Landshut to end his career at home. He played for the EVL for three years and was runner-up in 1995. In 1997 he ended his active career.

Helmut Steiger played 152 games for the German national team in his career. He played for the national team between 1982 and 1990 at a total of six world championships and also took part in the Winter Olympics in Sarajevo in 1984 and in Calgary in 1988 .
