Career

Franz is one of the most famous sons of Straubing ice hockey. He began his career with the boys of TSV Straubing . At the age of eleven he started to play ice hockey in Straubing and made the leap to the professional team at the age of 17. He also went through all the junior national teams. After the future EHC Straubing had to relegate to the Bayern League due to bankruptcy, Franz moved to SB Rosenheim in 1983 in the Bundesliga. There the striker played very successfully for nine years, including with the later national coach Hans Zach and was twice German champion. In addition, he is still the most successful goalscorer of the Rosenheim Sports Association with 220 goals. During his time in Rosenheim he also became a national player, in 1988 the right-shooter was elected to the Bundesliga All-Star team.
For the 1992/93 season Franz signed with EC Hedos Munich . In the 1993/94 season, the native of Upper Bavaria was the Munich German champion.
After the championship title, Franz went to EV Landshut . In the very first season he reached the play-off final with Landshutern, but they had to admit defeat to the Cologne EC.
After three years in Landshut and a total of 14 years in the top German league, Franz moved to ERC Sonthofen in what was then the Hacker-Pschorr League. After the ERC went bankrupt, he returned to Straubing after a season in autumn 1998. He played for the Straubing Tigers for four years, despite many injuries, he played 208 games in the Oberliga and the 2nd Bundesliga. As captain he led the Straubinger 2000 in the 2nd Bundesliga. After he could not play all point games in the 2001/02 season due to several injuries, the now 37-year-old ended his career.

However, Franz stayed with Straubing ice hockey as the full-time junior coach of EHC Straubing. Under his direction there was a clear upward trend in the offspring. In 2006 he also looked after the German U18 national team. From 2007 to 2009 Franz was alongside Jürgen Rumrich also co-trainer of the Straubing Tigers.
