Markus Berwanger (born June 7, 1963 in Rosenheim ) is a former German ice hockey player . He has been working as an ice hockey coach since the end of his active career . In the 2018/19 season he trained the EC Bad Tölz from the DEL2 .

Career

Berwanger comes from the offspring of SB Rosenheim and, in line with the Rosenheim youth philosophy, was given the opportunity to prove himself early on in the first team and thus in the professional field. He was allowed to play in the 1st Bundesliga in the 1981/82 season at the age of 18. In the 16 games he scored one goal and was able to celebrate the German championship in the end. In the following years, Berwanger remained loyal to his hometown club and celebrated the greatest successes of his career there by making his contribution to all three championship titles of SB Rosenheim. It was not until 1992 , when the SBR had to accept relegation, that he moved to Schwenningen to the ERC . A year later he moved to EV Landshut , where he played for two years. His career in the top German ice hockey class, the DEL , he finished with SC Riessersee and then moved to the Ayr Scottish Eagles in the British Ice Hockey Superleague , where he played alongside Sven Rampf . After a season at ERC Sonthofen in the Bayern League , he later moved to the upper division EHC Bad Aibling , where he took over as coach after his final career in 2000.

The Aiblingers, meanwhile renamed Dragodiles , experienced their heyday under Berwanger and even made it into the play-off round as a team with the smallest stadium, the lowest average attendance and a small budget . The team consisted largely of players who had previously been trained at SB Rosenheim and had also played there. In 2002 Berwanger moved to the Bietigheim-Bissingen Steelers and made it into the play-offs of the 2nd Bundesliga ice hockey there again . In the 2003/04 season he was Hans Zach's assistant coach at the Kölner Haien . This came full circle, because Berwanger was already on the ice with Zach in Rosenheim and was trained by him when Zach was assistant coach in Rosenheim in 1985. After Zach's move to the Hannover Scorpions , Berwanger also ended his work in Cologne and finally, after a creative break, in October 2006 became a coach at his home club, the upper division SB Rosenheim . There he could not save the already messed up league season and did not make it into the play-offs, but the minimum goal was achieved and they qualified for the DEB Cup . Since January 20, 2008, Berwanger is no longer the trainer of SB Rosenheim because he was prematurely released from his contractual relationship.

On January 4, 2009, Markus Berwanger was introduced as the new coach of the relegation-threatened second division club, the Dresdner Eislöwen . After the end of the 2008/09 season, Berwanger was not presented a new contract offer. Since January 19, 2010, Berwanger has been the trainer of Wölfe Freiburg , where Peter Salmik had recently resigned. In December 2010 he was released from his duties in Freiburg.

On April 16, 2012 he was introduced as the new coach at the major league club Moskitos Essen .

From January 1, 2014, Berwanger was assistant trainer at Adler Mannheim , where he again worked under Hans Zach. From the 2015/16 season Markus Berwanger was head coach at 1. EV Weiden in the Oberliga Süd. In February 2016, the coach's contract was prematurely extended for another season.
