Ulrich "Uli" Egen (born August 24, 1956 in Füssen ) is a former German ice hockey player and current - trainer and - functional . Since 2019 he has been the coach of Füchse Duisburg in the Oberliga Nord .

Career

As a player

Egen began his career in 1979 at EV Füssen in the Bundesliga . After he performed well there and scored 67 scorer points in 39 games in his first season as a professional , he received a contract offer from Düsseldorfer EG in the summer of 1982 , which he accepted and was consequently active for DEG. In Düsseldorf, Egen could not build on his performance from his time at EVF and left the club after three years in the 2nd Bundesliga for BSC Prussia . At DEG, the striker, previously known as a goalscorer, was only able to score 41 goals in three seasons. In contrast, there were 97 goals in Füssen, also within three seasons.

With the Berlin Prussians, Egen narrowly missed promotion to the then highest German ice hockey league, the Bundesliga. Especially in the 1985/86 season he was able to build on previous performances and recommended himself with 119 points after the main round and 31 points in the subsequent playoffs for a renewed change to the German Bundesliga. This followed in the 1987/88 season when those responsible at Eintracht Frankfurt signed him.

Egen played for three years in the jersey of Eintracht and was eliminated with the club three times in a row in the first round of the playoffs. After his contract in Frankfurt was not renewed at the end of the 1989/90 season , he returned to the 2nd Bundesliga and was there until 1993 in the squad of EC Kassel . He then ended his active ice hockey career.

International

Egen was also nominated several times for the German national team and took part with her in the 1979 , 1981 and 1982 World Championships and the 1980 Winter Olympics in the United States . There he reached tenth place with the German team.

As a trainer and functionary

After his active career, Ulrich Egen worked as an assistant trainer in Cologne and Augsburg and as a manager in Kassel and Augsburg. In November 2000 he replaced the recently dismissed Glen Williamson as head coach of the Eisbären Berlin from the German Ice Hockey League . Egen reached the playoff quarter-finals with the polar bears, but was released from his position during the 2001/02 season . His successor was the Canadian Pierre Pagé .

In the summer of 2007 he went to the Dutch Eredivisie and coached the Ruijters Eaters Geleen there , with whom he made it to the playoff semi-finals twice. Despite a valid contract and the successes achieved, the club dissolved the contract on July 24, 2009. One of the reasons for this was the controversial way of working Egens, who despite the coaching job in Geleen, worked as a sports director at Moskitos Essen. He then concentrated on the office of sports director in Essen and since the sudden departure of the previous trainer Juris Kruminsch, he was also the head coach and team manager.

On April 11, 2012 he was hired as head coach and sports director of the Kassel Huskies . On August 28, 2013, the North Hessian association announced that Egen was relieved of his duties with immediate effect.

From the beginning of 2014 Egen was a trainer at ESV Kaufbeuren , where he replaced Dieter Hegen . On November 17, 2014 he was released from the Board of ESV Kaufbeuren after 14 defeats in a row.

On January 25, 2015, the Füchse Duisburg announced that they had signed Egen as their new coach until the end of the season. On December 17, 2015, Egen was signed as the successor to Henry Thom from HC Gherdëina from the highest Italian league ( Serie A ).

After the separation from coach Lance Nethery shortly before the play-offs of the 2016/2017 season, the Füchse Duisburg announced on February 20, 2017 that Ulrich Egen should achieve the declared season goal of "promotion to the DEL2" on an equal footing with Reemt Pyka as coaching team.
