Career

Gordon Sherven began his career as a hockey player on the University of North Dakota team , where he was active from 1981 to 1984. Previously, he was selected in the 1981 NHL Entry Draft in the tenth round as a total of 197 players by the Edmonton Oilers , for whom he made his debut in the National Hockey League at the Calgary Flames on March 27, 1984 . Four days later at the Los Angeles Kings he scored his first goal on a pass from Paul Coffee . In the following season he started promisingly with a hat trick in the third game of the season with the Quebec Nordiques . After 37 games in which he recorded nine goals and seven assists, he was transferred to the Minnesota North Stars in exchange for Mark Napier over the course of the season , for which he scored 14 scorer points, including two goals, in a total of 35 games by the end of the season. After less than a year, the North Stars gave the former junior international back to the Edmonton Oilers, where he was only used five times by the end of the 1985/86 season . The rest of the time he spent with their farm team from the American Hockey League , the Nova Scotia Oilers .

From 1986 to 1988 Sherven was under contract with the Hartford Whalers in the NHL, but ran almost exclusively for the Canadian national team in preparation for the Olympic Winter Games in their own country. For the 1988/89 season, the Canadian was committed by SB DJK Rosenheim , with whom he won the German championship straight away . After four seasons, he left Bavaria and joined the Swiss National League A in the 1992/93 season for Zürcher SC . After the right-handed shooter won the German championship again with the EC Hedos Munich in the 1993/94 season , he played in the following season for their successor team, the Maddogs Munich, in the newly founded German Ice Hockey League . For the 1995/96 season, the former NHL professional moved within the DEL to Düsseldorfer EG , with whom he became German champions for the third time in his career. After the club had to withdraw from the DEL in 1998 for financial reasons, he returned to his ex-club from Rosenheim, where he ended his career in 2000 at the age of 36 after the Starbulls had also withdrawn from the DEL.

International

For Canada Sherven took part in the U20 World Junior Championship in 1983 and the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary .
