Kenneth "Ken" Steward Baird (* 1. February 1951 in Flin Flon , Manitoba ; † 18th December 2016 in Snow Lake , Manitoba) was a Canadian ice hockey player , who during his playing career, among other 349 games in the World Hockey Association completed and played for Duisburger SC in Germany.

Player career

In North America

Ken Baird played for the Flin Flon Bombers and the Estevan Bruins during his junior career . He set a team record for the most goals scored by a defensive player at the Bombers.

The California Golden Seals selected him in 15th position in the 1971 NHL Amateur Draft .

Ken Baird played, among other things, from 1972 to 1977 for the Edmonton Oilers in the former World Hockey Association , the then competitive league to the National Hockey League and won the championship and thus the AVCO World Trophy with the Winnipeg Jets in the 1977/78 season .

In the second home game of the Edmonton Oilers in the 1972/73 season , the Manitoba-born Canadian made it onto the front page of the Oilers stadium magazine - because he had his first fight with an opponent in the opening game against the Cleveland Crusaders . Edmonton won the game against Cleveland 4-1.

In total, he played 349 games in the World Hockey Association and ten games in the National Hockey League . He played for the Edmonton Oilers, Winnipeg Jets, Calgary Cowboys and the California Golden Seals .

In the NHL he got two assists in his ten games, in the WHA he scored 96 goals and 105 assists in a total of 349 games.

In Germany

After winning the championship of the North American Ice Hockey League World Hockey Association in the 1977/78 season , he came to Duisburger SC in 1978 together with Lynn Powis and Mike Ford . Led by these two players, Duisburg first made the leap to first class in 1979. Even in the Duisburger SC jersey, he never avoided a duel. Ken Baird played 179 times for Duisburg between 1978 and 1982, scoring 179 goals, preparing 177 other goals and spending 596 minutes in the penalty box.

It was here that he met his wife Uschi, with whom he later returned to Canada.

Ken Baird ended his playing career after the 1981/82 season at Duisburger SC.

After the playing career

As part of the first Oilers team, Ken Baird was there when the Edmonton NHL club said goodbye to its old arena, Rexall Place , in April 2016 . He was on the ice with exceptional players like Wayne Gretzky and Mark Messier .

Ken Baird passed away in December 2016 at the age of 65.
