The 1997/98 season was the 16th edition of the highest Finnish women's ice hockey league , the Naisten SM-sarja . The league was carried out by the Finnish ice hockey association Suomen Jääkiekkoliitto . JYP Jyväskylä secured the championship title for the second time in the club's history, defending its title from the previous year. The team of Joensuun Kiekko-Karhut lost the relegation against TPS and relegated to the second division .

Each team played 24 games. There were 2 points for a win and one for a draw. The first four teams in the preliminary round qualified for the play-off semi-finals.
