Deborah Doniach (born April 6, 1912 in Geneva , † January 1, 2004 in London ) was a British-Swiss physician and immunologist . She was a pioneer in the field of autoimmune diseases .

life and work

Doniach was the daughter of the concert pianist Joseph Niswitzki , who accompanied Joseph Szigeti among others , and went to school in Paris (Lycée Molière). She studied medicine at the Sorbonne . After marrying Sonny Doniach (later professor of pathology at the London Hospital), she continued her studies in London at the Royal Free Medical School. She then worked in the chemical pathology department and then in endocrinology at Middlesex Hospital in London. When the Immunology Department was founded in the mid-1960s, she moved there and became one of the first Consultant Immunopathologists in Great Britain and, from 1974, Professor of Clinical Immunology.

Doniach recognized the character of Hashimoto's thyroiditis as an autoimmune disease. With simultaneous research by Ivan Roitt and Peter Campbell at Middlesex Hospital, this led to the discovery of organ-specific autoimmune diseases. In collaboration with Roitt, she also researched pernicious anemia as an autoimmune disease (inflammation of the gastric mucosa), and she recognized the autoimmune nature of other diseases such as diabetes  1 and primary biliary cirrhosis .

In 1964 she received the Canada Gairdner International Award .

The marriage resulted in a son ( Sebastian Doniach , physics professor at Stanford University ) and a daughter.
