Lee Ethel Stecklein (* 23. April 1994 in Saint Paul , Minnesota ) is an American ice hockey player who since the season 2018/19 at the Minnesota Whitecaps in the National Women's Hockey League on the position of the defense plays. Stecklein has been a member of the United States women's national ice hockey team since 2013 and is multiple world and Olympic champion.

Career

Stecklein played at Roseville Area High School between 2008 and 2012 during her high school years . During this period, the defender took part in the U18 World Junior Championship in 2011 and 2012 . There she won a gold and a silver medal. Stecklein began her studies at the University of Minnesota in the 2012/13 school year . In the following five years she played parallel to this for the university team in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association , a division in the game operations of the National Collegiate Athletic Association . With the team she won the national college championship of the NCAA at the end of her rookie game year . In the same game year, the defender made her debut for the United States women's national ice hockey team and won her first gold medal at the 2013 World Cup .

Because of her achievements, Stecklein suspended her studies the following year and moved to the US Ice Hockey Association USA Hockey to prepare with the team for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi . There she won the silver medal with the US girls. She then returned to the University of Minnesota, with which she was again able to win the national championship in 2015 and 2016. In addition, the world championships in 2015 , 2016 and 2017 were joined by their world championship titles two to four.

For the 2017/18 season, the defensive player had successfully completed her studies and was then recruited by USA Hockey again to prepare for the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang , where she won the gold medal. She initially renounced her professional debut in the National Women's Hockey League , in whose draft in 2016 she was selected in second place overall by the Buffalo Beauts . Finally, she moved to the NWHL for the 2018/19 season , but to the Minnesota Whitecaps . With the Whitecaps she won the Isobel Cup , the league's championship trophy, at the end of the season . A few weeks later, she won the world title again with the US national team at the 2019 World Cup.
