Cameron "Cam" Barker (born April 4, 1986 in Winnipeg , Manitoba ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who was last under contract with Tampereen Ilves from the Finnish Liiga until November 2018 . Previously, Barker worked in North America, among others, where he played 327 games for the Chicago Blackhawks , Minnesota Wild , Edmonton Oilers and Vancouver Canucks .

Career

Barker began his career in 2001 in the Canadian Junior Western Hockey League with the Medicine Hat Tigers . Three years later he was selected during the 2004 NHL Entry Draft by the Chicago Blackhawks in the first round in third place overall. The left shooter then stayed with the Tigers before moving to the Chicago Blackhawks in the National Hockey League at the end of the 2005/06 season. There he completed a season game in the same game year. In the following years Barker was mostly in the squad of the Norfolk Admirals , the then farm team of the Blackhawks, in the American Hockey League . Since the then 20-year-old was able to convince the Admirals, he got the chance to prove himself in the NHL during the 2006/07 season . In total, he was used in 35 games in which the trained defender was able to achieve eight points.

In 2007, the management of the Blackhawks signed a cooperation agreement with the Rockford IceHogs , who play in the AHL . Then Barker went on the ice for the IceHogs. In his third season in Chicago he was able to convince again in the AHL and thus recommended himself for a new nomination for the NHL squad of the Blackhawks. In the end, it was enough for 45 NHL games, in which the first-round draft pick from 2004 scored 18 points.

On July 1, 2011, Barker signed a one-year contract with the Edmonton Oilers . A year later that contract expired and Barker became a free agent. At the end of September 2012, he took part in the Texas Stars training camp and received a place in the AHL team. After 23 games for the Texas Stars, his trial contract expired and he had to leave the team.

It wasn't until mid-January 2013 that Barker received a new contract until the end of the season, this time with the Vancouver Canucks . After he had not received a contract in North America in the summer and fall of 2013, he decided to move to Europe and signed a one-year contract with Barys Astana from the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) in November 2013 . Following the 2013/14 season, Barker returned to North America and took part in the training of the Chicago Blackhawks , but they did not commit him.

On December 22, 2014, Barker was signed by the KHL club HC Slovan Bratislava until the end of the 2014/15 season . He then stayed in Bratislava during the 2015/16 season. In May 2016 he signed again with Barys Astana , but returned to Slovan Bratislava again in August 2017 after the 2016/17 season was over. On January 12, 2018, Cam Barker moved to the SCL Tigers in the Swiss National League , but was only used in three games. From the end of October to the end of November 2018 he was finally active for Tampereen Ilves from the Finnish Liiga .

International

In 2005 and 2006 he took part in the Junior World Championship with the Canadian junior national team. In both years he was able to win the gold medal with his team. In the final they beat the team from Russia 6-1 and 5-0 respectively.
