Career
Steve Bégin began his career as a hockey player with the Foreurs de Val-d'Or , for which he was active from 1995 to 1998 in the Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec and with whom he won the Coupe du Président in 1998. During this time he was selected in the NHL Entry Draft 1996 in the second round as a total of 40th player by the Calgary Flames , for which he made his debut in the National Hockey League at the end of the 1997/98 season .
With Calgary's farm team , the Saint John Flames from the American Hockey League , Bégin won the Calder Cup in the 2000/01 season and was awarded the Jack A. Butterfield Trophy as the most valuable player in the playoffs. After five years in Calgary, Bégin was handed over to the Buffalo Sabers on July 3, 2003 together with Chris Drury in exchange for Steven Reinprecht and Rhett Warrener , but already committed before the start of the season by the Canadiens de Montréal , for whom he played the following five and a half years. The only exception was the 2004/05 season , when the Canadian ran up during the lockout for their farm team, the Hamilton Bulldogs in the AHL.
From the end of February 2009, Bégin was under contract with the NHL club Dallas Stars , who had signed him in exchange for Doug Janik . In July 2009, Bégin was signed by the Boston Bruins , but received no contract renewal in 2010. Due to an injury, he was unable to find a new club before the Nashville Predators signed him in mid-October. After the Canadian had suspended the 2011/12 season due to injury, he was signed by his ex-team Calgary Flames in January 2013 after a successful trial period. There the striker ended the season and subsequently received a contract with Calgary's cooperation partner Abbotsford Heat . After another injury meant another year off, Bégin ended his active career in January 2014 at the age of 35.
For the following season , the Canadian was hired by his junior team Foreurs de Val-d'Or as an assistant coach. He occupied this post for a season.
International
For his home country, Bégin took part in the U20 World Junior Championship in Finland in 1998 . He acted as the assistant captain of the team that finished eighth at the end of the tournament. The striker remained without a scorer point in seven tournament appearances .
