Douglas Janik (born March 26, 1980 in Agawam , Massachusetts ) is an American ice hockey defender who has been under contract with SV Kaltern in the Italian Serie A since October 2014 .
Career
Doug Janik was selected during the 1999 NHL Entry Draft in the second round in a total of 55th position by the Buffalo Sabers . The American, who played for the University of Maine's ice hockey team from 1999 to 2002 , was under contract with the Sabers for a total of five years, but mainly played for their farm team from the American Hockey League , the Rochester Americans . On July 6, 2006 Janik signed as a free agent a contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning , for which he was active for two years.
On July 15, 2008, the defender received a contract with the Chicago Blackhawks , but was shortly thereafter struck out of their squad because the salary cap was exceeded without ever having played for the Blackhawks. On October 2, 2008, he moved to the Dallas Stars in exchange for a possible right to vote during an NHL Entry Draft . However, he did not stay long in Dallas either, as he was given to the Montréal Canadiens in February 2009 for Steve Bégin . As a free agent, Janik signed a contract with the Detroit Red Wings in July 2009 . For their farm team, the Grand Rapids Griffins , he was a regular on the ice until the end of the 2011/12 season .
For the 2012/13 season , the defender finally signed a one-year contract with Adler Mannheim from the German Ice Hockey League . After only one season he returned to North America and joined the San Antonio Rampage from the AHL for the 2013/14 season before he was transferred to the Chicago Wolves during the current season within the league . In October 2014 Janik decided to move to Europe again and has been on the ice for SV Kaltern in Serie A since the beginning of the 2014/15 season .
