Benjamin "Ben" Eager (born January 22, 1984 in Ottawa , Ontario ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player who played 454 games for the Philadelphia Flyers , Chicago Blackhawks , Atlanta Thrashers , San Jose Sharks during his active career between 2000 and 2015 and Edmonton Oilers in the National Hockey League on the position of left winger . In the service of the Chicago Blackhawks, Eager, who embodied the game type of the Enforcer , won the Stanley Cup in 2010 .
Career
Eager began his junior career at the age of 15 in his hometown with the Ottawa Junior Senators in the Central Junior A Hockey League , a sub-league of the Association of the Canadian Hockey League . After 19 points from 50 games in his only game year, he moved in the fall of 2000 to the Oshawa Generals in the Ontario Hockey League . The striker completed a total of four seasons with the traditional team and drew attention to himself with his scoring qualities as well as his physically contoured game. After getting used to it in his rookie year , Eager consistently exceeded 35 points in the following three years, but was also in the penalty box for over 200 minutes. At that time, the attacker embodied the power forward player type and aroused the interest of the scouts of the National Hockey League with his solid game . In the NHL Entry Draft 2002 he was therefore selected in the first round in 23rd place by the Phoenix Coyotes . A few months earlier, Eager had participated with the Canadian national team in the U18 World Junior Championship in 2002 , in which the team had reached sixth place. It was the Canadians' first tournament participation in this age group.
In spring 2004 - following the junior season - the Canadian finally switched to the professional field when he signed a three-year contract. Instead of running for the Phoenix Coyotes, however, he was used for the Philadelphia Phantoms , the farm team of the Philadelphia Flyers from the American Hockey League . These had received his transfer rights on February 9, 2004 together with Sean Burke and Branko Radivojevič in exchange for Mike Comrie from the Coyotes. After first appearances for the Phantoms in the 2003/04 season , Eager became an integral part of the Phantoms in the 2004/05 season . At the end of the season he won the prestigious Calder Cup with the team . The Canadian also spent the following year mainly on the farm team, but also made his debut in the NHL for the Flyers. At the end of the season, he had completed 25 season and two playoff games. His performance finally earned him a regular place in the Flyers squad for the 2006/07 season . Despite 233 penalty minutes, the striker had a good season and at the end of the season received the Pelle Lindbergh Memorial , an award from the Philadelphia Flyers for the player who had improved the most compared to the previous season. The election had taken place under his teammate. As a result of his good performance, the Flyers extended his expiring contract by two years.
After Eager had started the season with the Flyers, he was given to the Chicago Blackhawks on December 18, 2007 in exchange for Jim Vandermeer . Several concussions and a shoulder injury meant that after 23 appearances for Philadelphia at the beginning of the season, Eager could only play nine more games this season for the Blackhawks. It was only in the 2008/09 season that the left winger found his way back into the up-and-coming Chicago franchise and completed 75 games in which he mostly played the role of an enforcer despite 15 scorer points . This also brought him some temporary suspensions from the league management during the season . Still, the Blackhawks extended his contract for a year. The 2009/10 season was again marked by many injuries to the striker. In time for the playoffs, the Canadian reported fit. In addition to 60 season games, he played all 18 playoff appearances of his team, which were crowned with winning the Stanley Cup . It was the Blackhawks' first cup win since the 1960/61 season .
In the summer of 2010 there were some restructuring in the squad of the reigning Stanley Cup winner due to the possible exceeding of the upper salary limit in the 2010/11 season . This also affected Eager, who was handed over to the Atlanta Thrashers on June 24, 2010 together with Dustin Byfuglien , Brent Sopel and Akim Aliu . In return, Marty Reasoner , Joey Crabb and Jeremy Morin and the 27th and 54th franchise in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft moved to the Windy City . After Eager was initially unable to agree on a new contract with the Thrashers, he was assured a new one-year contract through an arbitration ruling. But Eager only stayed in Atlanta for a good six months. At the middle of the season, on January 18, 2011, he was given up for a five-round vote in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft to the San Jose Sharks .
On July 1, 2011, Eager signed a three-year contract with the Edmonton Oilers as a free agent . In his first season with the Oilers, he was only used in the NHL. In the following two seasons between 2012 and 2014, however, he was mainly used with the Oklahoma City Barons in the AHL. After his contract expired in the summer of 2014, he decided to move to Europe and was signed by HK CSKA Moscow from the Continental Hockey League , but left the club in December 2014 and was signed by the Chicago Wolves . There he ended his active career in the summer of 2015 at the age of 31.
