Akim Aliu (born April 24, 1989 in Okene , Nigeria ) is a Canadian ice hockey player with Ukrainian citizenship who has been playing for the Orlando Solar Bears in the ECHL since February 2019 .

Career

Aliu was born in Nigeria. However, he spent most of his childhood in the Ukrainian capital Kiev , his mother's hometown, where his father studied at the university there. At the age of seven he moved to Toronto, Canada with his parents . He gained his first experience on ice skates at the age of ten.

Beginnings in the OHL and controversy with Steve Downie (2005-2009)

At the age of 16, Aliu was selected in the 2005 OHL Priority Selection Draft by the Windsor Spitfires in the first round. At the end of 2005 there was an argument between his teammate Steve Downie and himself. After Aliu had been checked hard by Downie in training and had lost three teeth, a fist fight broke out between the two of them in the same unit . The incident is said to have been a reaction to the fact that Aliu had refused to take part in an "induction ceremony" in the previous weeks, during which the new players had to strip naked in front of their fellow players in the shower stall of the team bus. The dispute and how it came about caused a sensation in the USA and sparked a media discussion about the traditional induction rituals at universities. Subsequently, Downie was suspended for five games and Aliu for one game, while coach Moe Mantha was suspended for 40 games and the club was fined $ 35,000 by the league. The two players involved finally demanded a change, so that Aliu was transferred to the Sudbury Wolves within the league . He also spent the 2006/07 season with the Wolves.

On June 1, 2007 Sudbury also transferred the winger, which he played from the 2007/08 season for the London Knights . In the 2007 NHL Entry Draft Aliu, the second Nigerian-born player after Rumun Ndur , was selected in the second round in 56th place by the Chicago Blackhawks . In the 2007/08 game year he had his best season in the OHL and was signed by the Chicago Blackhawks for three years in August 2008. He had previously made his professional debut with the Rockford IceHogs in the American Hockey League . The 2008/09 season he still played in the OHL, where he was transferred from the London Knights to his former team, the Sudbury Wolves, over the course of the season. Aliu contributed 26 points scorer in 29 games in Sudbury and reached the first round of the playoffs.

AHL and ECHL (since 2009)

During the 2009/10 season he played parallel for Rockford in the AHL and the Toledo Walleye in the ECHL . In the summer of 2010 he was transferred from the Chicago Blackhawks to the Atlanta Thrashers in an extensive transfer business , so he moved to Atlanta with Dustin Byfuglien , Ben Eager and Brent Sopel , while the Blackhawks Marty Reasoner , Joey Crabb , Jeremy Morin and two options for the Received NHL Entry Draft 2010 . With the AHL farm team of the Thrashers, the Chicago Wolves , he started the 2010/11 season and scored five goals and four assists in 43 games. In addition, he was on the ice in 16 games for Chicago's cooperation partner Gwinnett Gladiators in the ECHL, for which he contributed twelve goals and eight assists during this period.

In March 2011, he moved within the AHL to the Peoria Rivermen , with whom he was eliminated at the end of the season in the first playoff round. On January 30, 2012, the Winnipeg Jets transferred him to the Calgary Flames in exchange for defense attorney John Negrin . There he came in the following year and a half to seven appearances in the National Hockey League , but spent much of the time with the farm team Abbotsford Heat , for which he had played on loan before his commitment by the Flames . From September 2013 he played for two months under a trial contract ( try-out ) for the Hamilton Bulldogs , before he was signed again on a trial basis by the Hartford Wolf Pack in December of the same year . After Aliu could not recommend himself for a longer-term engagement there either, he decided to move to Sweden to AIK Solna , for which he also only played two games in the Svenska Hockeyligan .

In the run-up to the 2014/15 season, he took part in the preparation for the Rochester Americans season and then received a trial contract. After ten games in the AHL, he was released from his contract and signed in January 2015 with the Bakersfield Condors from the East Coast Hockey League . In the summer of 2015, the attacker completed the pre-season at the Lake Erie Monsters , but received no contract offer there. In November 2015 he moved to Europe again, where Aliu joined the Russian club Amur Khabarovsk from the Continental Hockey League . There, too, the striker only played sporadically, just like in his subsequent stations until summer 2018 at the Florida Everblades , Atlanta Gladiators , Cleveland Monsters in the United States, HC 05 Banská Bystrica in Slovakia and Karlskrona HK and IK Pantern in Sweden. In February 2019 he found a new employer in the Orlando Solar Bears .
