Schneider celebrated his greatest career success in the service of the Canadiens de Montréal by winning the Stanley Cup in 1993 and in the jersey of the national team of the United States by winning the 1996 World Cup of Hockey . He was inducted into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame in 2015 .
Career
Mathieu Schneider played for the Mount Saint Charles Academy , a high school in Woonsocket ( Rhode Island ) until 1986 , where he won three regional championships. He then moved to the Canadian Junior League Ontario Hockey League and played there for three years for the Cornwall Royals . After his first year in the OHL, he was selected in the 1987 NHL Entry Draft by the Canadiens de Montréal in the third round at position 44. In the 1987/88 season he was allowed to complete four games for Montréal in the National Hockey League parallel to his missions in the OHL . The season 1988/89 was his last year in the junior league and as in 1988 he was elected to the First All-Star Team of the OHL. Despite playing in the position of defender, his senior year earned him 73 points in 59 games.
In the 1989/90 season Schneider completed 44 games in the NHL and scored 21 points. Partly he spent the season with the farm team in the American Hockey League with the Canadiens de Sherbrooke . For the 1990/91 season he made the final jump to the NHL and was part of the permanent squad of Montréal. In the 1992/93 season he was able to win the Stanley Cup with the Canadiens . Two years later in April 1995 Schneider was transferred to the New York Islanders . In the spring of 1996 Mathieu Schneider took part in the NHL All-Star Game for the first time and only a little later he moved to a transfer business for the Toronto Maple Leafs . He stayed there for two and a half years before being transferred again, this time to the New York Rangers in the fall of 1998 .
In the 2000 NHL Expansion Draft he was selected by the Columbus Blue Jackets , but he never played for the team and a few months later signed a contract with the Los Angeles Kings , where he played until 2003 and was assistant captain for almost two years . After his second participation in the NHL All-Star Game in 2003 , he was transferred to the Detroit Red Wings . At the Red Wings he achieved the best result of his career in the 2005/06 season with 59 points. In the 2006/07 season Schneider was again an important pillar in the defense of the Red Wings. However, he injured himself in the second round of the playoffs and was unable to intervene when the Red Wings were defeated by the Anaheim Ducks in the final of the Western Conference .
In the summer, his contract in Detroit expired and he moved to the Anaheim Ducks, which offered him a two-year contract with a total salary of $ 11.25 million. In Anaheim he could not quite build on the performances of the previous two years, but was able to play a good season with twelve goals and 27 assists. In autumn 2008 he had to leave the Ducks after only one year when he was transferred to the Atlanta Thrashers . In March 2010 he was transferred from the Vancouver Canucks to the Phoenix Coyotes in exchange for Sean Zimmerman . At the end of the season he ended his playing career shortly before his 41st birthday.
Mathieu Schneider is the best scorer of all Jewish-born ice hockey players in NHL history with 743 points.
International
Mathieu Schneider won the World Cup of Hockey with the US ice hockey team in 1996 . In 1998 he took part in the Winter Olympics in Nagano . In 2002, however, he had to cancel his participation due to an injury. At the 2006 Winter Games in Turin , he played again for the USA, but was again unable to win a medal.
