On October 18, he scored his first NHL goal against the Detroit Red Wings , after an assist and a fight against Brad Norton he managed the so-called Gordie Howe hat trick for the first time in his career .

On February 24, 2007 O'Brien was transferred to the Tampa Bay Lightning along with a third-round pick for the NHL Entry Draft 2007 , in return the Ducks received goalkeeper Gerald Coleman and a first-round pick. After about a year and a half on the US southeast coast, he was given up in a four-player transfer deal to the Vancouver Canucks .

After the 2015/16 season he was initially unemployed and only received a short-term contract with Hämeenlinnan Pallokerho from Liiga in Finland in January 2017 , which was extended two weeks later until the end of the season.

From November 2017 on, O'Brien was under contract with the Black Wings Linz in the Erste Bank Eishockey Liga . After the season he ended his active career in summer 2018.
