Port Hope is a Canadian community in the province , Ontario in southeastern Canada . Port Hope is on the north coast of Lake Ontario at the mouth of the Ganaraska River . The river owes its name to the Iroquois village that was located here. United Kingdom loyalists fleeing the newly independent United States began to settle in the area in the 1790s.

history

Port Hope Railway Station 1913

In 1834, Port Hope had 1,500 residents and was incorporated as a city - the first to be recognized on the seafront between Kingston and Toronto. Its greatest growth began 20 years later when the railways revolutionized travel in what is now Ontario . In 1856 the Grand Trunk Railway connected Port Hope to Toronto and the Atlantic coast. The viaduct over the Ganaraska River was the second largest technical challenge on the route, surpassed only by bridging the St. Lawrence River in Montreal.

Later another railway line was to be built north from Port Hope to open up the vast forests and new farms in central Ontario. To finance this route, the city council borrowed £ 50,000, an immense sum at the time. Within a few years, the stake had tripled, the line extended to Peterborough and Lindsay. Eventually she reached Georgian Bay in Midland. Large quantities of wood and grain came over this route. Some of it went east to England, but most of it was exported via Rochester across the sea to the USA. With the economic boom, residential construction spread east and west across the river, and new industries emerged.

Some residents became international figures. William Leonard Hunt , known as The Great Farini , challenged the most famous tightrope walker of his day, Charles Blondin , who did stunts over the Niagara Gorge in 1860 . Joseph Scriven wrote the words of one of the world's most popular hymns: What a Friend We Have in Jesus . Unlike many other communities, Port Hope has never experienced economic collapse or out-of-control development.

Many areas of the old town, including the downtown business district, have hardly changed since the days of Queen Victoria. Fortunately, residents quickly realized the value of their architectural heritage. Hundreds of them have worked to maintain, restore, or renovate commercial and private homes, making the city a tourist destination and a landmark of Ontario conservation. Like a time capsule, Port Hope captures the atmosphere of a small Ontario town in the late 19th century.

Film set

Port Hope served as the set for the films It (2017) and It Chapter 2 in 2017 and 2019 .
