Alex Joseph Jean Tanguay (born November 21, 1979 in Saint-Justin , Québec ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player and current coach . The left winger played over 1,000 games for five teams in the National Hockey League between 1999 and 2016 , most of them for the Colorado Avalanche and the Calgary Flames . With the Avalanche, which had selected him in twelfth position in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft , he won the Stanley Cup in the 2001 playoffs . He also ran briefly for the Canadiens de Montréal , Tampa Bay Lightning and Arizona Coyotes . Tanguay has been an assistant coach for the Iowa Wild in the American Hockey League since July 2019 .
Career
Tanguay played during his junior years at Halifax Mooseheads in the Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec . The Colorado Avalanche selected him in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft in the first round as twelfth. The season after the draft he still played in Halifax and at the end of the season he was brought in for a few games in the Avalanche farm team , with the Hershey Bears in the American Hockey League (AHL).
From the 1999/2000 season he played in the NHL for the Colorado Avalanche. Tanguay is a classic winger with a keen eye for goal. He was best known in Colorado when he set one of the best storm lines in the league with Joe Sakic and Milan Hejduk . With a very strong performance and 21 scorer points in the playoffs, he played a major role in winning the 2001 Stanley Cup .
In the 2004/05 strike season he made a brief guest appearance in Switzerland at HC Lugano . For the 2006/07 season he left Colorado and moved to the Calgary Flames , in return for the exchange deal, Jordan Leopold came to the Avalanche.
After a very good first year in Calgary, in which he was able to score 81 points in 81 games, a weaker second year followed and at the end of the 2007/08 season he was together with a five-round draft pick for the 2008 NHL Entry Draft to the Canadiens de Montréal , who gave Greg Nemisz in exchange and a second-round draft pick for the 2009 NHL Entry Draft to the Flames.
On December 30, 2008, he suffered a shoulder injury in the game against Tampa Bay Lightning after a body check by Yevgeny Artyuchin , which excluded him from playing for more than two months, so that he came to only 50 of 82 possible games for the Canadiens. After the season, the Franco-Canadian franchise did not extend the contract, whereupon Tanguay signed a contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning.
The Canadian winger returned to the Colorado Avalanche on June 27, 2013 in an exchange between the Calgary Flames for David Jones and Shane O'Brien , where he last played in 2006. His teammate Cory Sarich was also part of the deal.
During the 2014/15 season Tanguay completed his 1000th game in the NHL.
In February 2016 Tanguay along with Kyle Wood and Conner Bleackley were given to the Arizona Coyotes , who in return sent Mikkel Bødker to Colorado. In Arizona, the attacker ended the 2015/16 season, but did not receive a further contract from the Coyotes.
In February 2017, Tanguay announced the end of his active career and took on a position as an analyst with the NHL Network with immediate effect . He returned to professional ice hockey for the 2019/20 season when he was introduced to the Iowa Wild from the AHL in July 2019 as the new assistant coach .
