Kyle Wood (born May 4, 1996 in Waterloo , Ontario ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Detroit Red Wings of the National Hockey League since December 2019 and for their farm team , the Grand Rapids Griffins , in the American Hockey League plays in the position of defender .
Career
Wood spent his junior years in junior teams from his native Waterloo until 2012 , before he was drawn to the Ontario Junior Hockey League for the 2012/13 season , where he played for the Orangeville Flyers. At the end of the season, the defender made his debut for the Brampton Battalion in the Ontario Hockey League , which had selected him in the OHL Priority Selection . By relocating the battalion in the summer of 2013, Wood ran for the North Bay Battalion in the same league at the beginning of the 2013/14 season . With the team, the defender reached the final series of the J. Ross Robertson Cup , in which they were defeated by the Guelph Storm . Then Wood was selected in the NHL Entry Draft 2014 in the third round in 84th place by the Colorado Avalanche from the National Hockey League .
Wood first followed two more years at North Bay in the OHL, towards the end of which his transfer rights were given to the Arizona Coyotes in February 2016 . Alex Tanguay and Conner Bleackley switched with him , while the Colorado Avalanche received the Danish Mikkel Bødker in return. A few weeks later Wood signed an NHL entry contract in Arizona, so that he made his professional debut in the American Hockey League towards the end of the 2015/16 season for the then Coyotes farm team Springfield Falcons . At the beginning of the 2016/17 game year , the Canadian was on the ice for Arizona's newly founded farm team Tucson Roadrunners . In his first full season with the professionals, the defensive player collected 43 scorer points in 68 appearances, which not only earned him an invitation to the AHL All-Star Classic during the season but also the election to the AHL All-Rookie Team at the end of the season. The second year was less successful for Wood, who found himself more often in the stands due to the new coaching staff and was used in only 49 season games. Before the beginning of his last year of contract, he was given in June 2018 in exchange for Adam Helewka to the San Jose Sharks or their farm team, the San Jose Barracuda . After a season that he also spent exclusively in the AHL, the defender moved to the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for Trevor Carrick . There he also played in the AHL with the Charlotte Checkers until December 2019 before he was handed over to the Detroit Red Wings . In return, the Finnish defender Oliwer Kaski moved to Carolina.
