Dennis Earl Wideman (born March 20, 1983 in Kitchener , Ontario ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player and current coach . The defender played over 800 games in the National Hockey League , most of them for the Boston Bruins and the Calgary Flames , but was best known for his check against a linesman in January 2016. Since November 2017 he has been working as an assistant coach for the Kitchener Rangers .

Career

The 1.83 m tall defender began his professional career with the Sudbury Wolves in the Canadian Junior League Ontario Hockey League and then moved to league rivals London Knights in 2000 , before becoming the 241st player in the eighth round of the Buffalo in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft Sabers was selected.

Before he could complete a game in the organization of the Sabers, the right shooter was on the St. Louis Blues transferred to him during the lockout in the 2004-05 season with the Worcester IceCats and in the following season , first at the Peoria Rivermen in of the American Hockey League . On November 9, 2005 Wideman was appointed to the NHL squad of the Blues for the first time, his first appearance in the highest North American professional league completed the Canadian against the Columbus Blue Jackets .

After 55 games in the 2006/07 season , Wideman was finally transferred to the Boston Bruins in exchange for Brad Boyes , for whom he was able to score the 18,000th goal in franchise history on December 31, 2007 against the Atlanta Thrashers . In June 2010, Wideman was given in an exchange deal with the Florida Panthers . In late February 2011, shortly before the trade deadline, he was sent to the Washington Capitals , who in exchange gave Jake Hauswirth and a third-round vote in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft to the Florida Panthers.

His contract expired after the 2011/12 season. The Capitals then transferred the rights to the player to the Calgary Flames on June 27, 2012 , Washington received Jordan Hendry in return and a five-round vote for the 2013 NHL Entry Draft . Dennis Wideman signed a new five-year contract with the Flames that same day, which guaranteed him an annual salary of $ 5.25 million.

In January 2016 and underwent Wideman greater media attention when he played against the Nashville Predators the linesman Don Henderson hard from behind on the ground checked . The defender himself had recently been checked by an opponent, fell headlong into the gang and was on his way to the Calgary Flames bench when he collided with the referee. In this context, Wideman asserted that he had only seen the linesman at the last moment and therefore could no longer avoid contact; in addition, he apologized to Henderson during the game and in this regard has not been conspicuous in any way in his career, which has lasted around 800 NHL games so far. Nevertheless, the NHL banned him according to the regulations for 20 games and imposed a fine of 564,516.20 US dollars determined by the period of bans and his salary. As a result, the NHLPA and the Calgary Flames filed an official complaint, the central argument of which is a concussion already discussed by the media , which Wideman presumably had as a result of the previous check, but not (contrary to the planned processes; "concussion protocol") was investigated immediately after the incident. As a result, the defender was not "in control of his senses" and did not deliberately run into the linesman. In the first instance, Gary Bettman , commissioner of the NHL, dismissed the objection and upheld the suspension, so that the case was tried in a second instance in a neutral arbitration . Wideman's suspension was reduced to 10 games, but at the time of the decision he had already missed 19 games. Halving the number of games also reduces the fine by half. In addition, the incident drew renewed attention to the NHL's inadequate handling of potential traumatic brain injury.

After the 2016/17 season, his expiring contract in Calgary was not extended, so Wideman ended his active career and returned to his hometown, where he has been assistant coach for the Kitchener Rangers since November 2017 .
