At the end of the 2002/03 season, Liles played for the Hershey Bears in the American Hockey League and made his professional debut there. The next year he was in the Avalanche squad and played his first season in the National Hockey League . Here, too, he showed his skills and often formed a defender duo with Rob Blake . Subsequently, Liles was elected to the NHL All-Rookie Team . The next season did not take place due to the lockout , so he was initially without a team. In early 2005 he signed a contract with the Iserlohn Roosters from the German Ice Hockey League . Here he contributed together with Mike York , who also bridged the year in Europe , to the relegation of the Sauerland.
For the 2005/06 season , Liles returned to Colorado and was the team's top scorer in the early stages of the season. In the summer of 2006 he extended his contract for two years. In Colorado, the defender played an important role in the power play and was praised for his good build-up passes. Therefore, on June 30, 2008, another contract extension followed, this time for four years, in which he should earn 16 million US dollars. On June 24, 2011, the defender was given to the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for a second-round vote in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft .
In January 2014, Liles joined the Carolina Hurricanes with Dennis Robertson , who in return sent Tim Gleason to Toronto. Liles stayed in Carolina for almost two years before he was handed over to the Boston Bruins in February 2016 . In return, the Hurricanes received Anthony Camara , a third-round vote for the NHL Entry Draft 2016 and a five-round vote for the NHL Entry Draft 2017 . In Boston he ended the season and then ended his active career.
