Lombardi was selected in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft as a total of 215th player by the Edmonton Oilers . However, since he never signed a contract with the Oilers, he was again included in the Entry Draft and selected in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft as the 90th player of the Calgary Flames .
In the 2002/03 season, the attacker played exclusively for the then Calgarys farm team , the Saint John Flames from the American Hockey League . In the following season, however, he was exclusively for the Calgary Flames in the National Hockey League on the ice and reached the finals of the Stanley Cup with his team . There he and his team lost to the Tampa Bay Lightning . Lombardi was unable to play for months due to an elbow injury that he suffered in the playoffs.
During the lockout in the 2004/05 NHL season , Lombardi played for the then AHL farm team of the Flames, the Lowell Lock Monsters . Due to his injury from the previous season, however, he only played in nine regular season games and eleven playoff games. In the 2005/06 season Lombardi played again for the then farm team, the Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights , but has been in the Flames' NHL squad since then. On March 4, 2009 he was transferred to the Phoenix Coyotes together with Brandon Prust and a first-round vote in exchange for Olli Jokinen . In July 2010, he moved to the Nashville Predators , but could only complete two games due to a concussion .
On July 3, 2011, Lombardi was transferred to the Toronto Maple Leafs in a barter deal with Cody Franson in exchange for Brett Lebda and Robert Slaney in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft . The transfer also included a four-round suffrage in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft, which was dependent on the number of games Lombardis played.
After the NHL lockout ended in January 2013, the Toronto Maple Leafs gave him to the Phoenix Coyotes in exchange for a four-round vote in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft . At the trade deadline on April 3, 2013, he was transferred to the Anaheim Ducks .
For the 2013/14 season Lombardi signed a one year contract with the Genève-Servette HC from the National League A .
