Brett Steven Lebda (born January 15, 1982 in Buffalo Grove , Illinois ) is a former American ice hockey player who played 459 games for the Detroit Red Wings , Toronto Maple Leafs and Columbus Blue Jackets between 1998 and 2013 has played in the National Hockey League on the position of defender . In the service of the Detroit Red Wings, in whose organization he spent most of his career, Lebda won the Stanley Cup in 2008 .
Career
Brett Lebda attended Buffalo Grove High School for two years. He began his career in 2000 when he played for the University of Notre Dame , Indiana, in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association . After his first season he was elected to the CCHA's all-rookie team. In total, he played for the team for four years and was appointed to the league's second all-star team in 2004. During the 2003/04 season he played in addition to the college championship games, six games for the Grand Rapids Griffins , the farm team of the Detroit Red Wings , in the American Hockey League .
In the summer of 2004 he received a contract with the Red Wings, but since the 2004/05 season was canceled due to the lockout , he completed the season in the AHL with the Grand Rapids Griffins. During the 2005/06 season he commuted several times between the AHL and the National Hockey League and played for both Detroit and Grand Rapids.
In the summer of 2006, his contract was extended by four years and established himself as a regular player with the Red Wings during the 2006/07 season . He scored five goals and prepared 13 and moved Detroit to the final of the Western Conference. In July 2010 he moved to the Toronto Maple Leafs .
On July 3, 2011 Lebda was transferred to the Nashville Predators in a barter deal with Robert Slaney in exchange for Cody Franson and Matthew Lombardi . The transfer also included a fourth-round vote in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft , which was dependent on the number of games played Lombardi. In August 2011, his contract was paid off by the Nashville Predators and Lebda became available as a free agent . He then joined the Springfield Falcons from the AHL and was active for them until January 2012. On January 19, 2012 he signed with the cooperation partner of the Falcons, the Columbus Blue Jackets from the NHL, a one-year contract until the end of the 2011/12 season . In his last professional season, the American worked for the Rockford IceHogs and Binghamton Senators in the AHL before he declared his playing career over at the age of 31.
International
For his home country Lebda took part with the U20 national team of the United States in the U20 World Junior Championship in 2002 in the Czech Republic . The defender was used in all seven tournament games of the Americans and scored two goals. The United States finished the tournament outside of the medal ranks in fifth place.
