Career
Betts played as a teenager in the Canadian Junior Western Hockey League with the Prince George Cougars . He stayed with them for four seasons between 1996 and 2000 and reached the playoffs every year.
After Betts had already been selected in the second round of the NHL Entry Draft in 1998 in 33rd place by the Calgary Flames , they brought him for the first time in their farm team in the American Hockey League at the beginning of the 2000/01 season . At the Saint John Flames , the center performed well and also spent most of the 2001/02 season there. In 67 games in the regular season Betts posted 49 scorer points, which had the consequence that he was appointed to the NHL squad of the Calgary Flames for the first time in February 2002. In total, he came to six missions in which he could score a goal. In the following two seasons, he came only sporadically, as he was repeatedly thrown back by injuries.
At the trade deadline in March 2004, he was transferred to the New York Rangers along with Jamie McLennan and Greg Moore . In return, Chris Simon moved to Calgary. During the lockout of the 2004/05 NHL season , Betts played for the Rangers AHL farm team, the Hartford Wolf Pack . From the following season 2005/06 he was then part of the regular staff of the Rangers and did particularly well as an excellent outnumbered player.
