The defender became a regular of the Avalanche in the 2009/10 season ; so he completed 61 games in the regular season, in which he scored seven goals and 20 points. In the playoffs he was eliminated with Colorado in the first round against the San Jose Sharks . Cumiskey appeared in all six games, scoring a goal and an assist. The following season Cumiskey dropped out early in the season due to a traumatic brain injury and missed his team for 34 games. After returning to the team in January 2011, the player played seven more games before whiplash and out for the remainder of the season. Before the start of the 2011/12 NHL season , the defender signed a new one-year contract with the Avalanche.

On October 8, 2011 Cumiskey was transferred to the Anaheim Ducks , the Colorado Avalanche received in return the player Jake Newton and a seven-round vote for the 2013 NHL Entry Draft . Three days later, the defender was sent to Anaheim's farm team, the Syracuse Crunch of the American Hockey League . After Cumiskey spent the 2011/12 season exclusively in the AHL, he signed a one-year contract with MODO Hockey from the Swedish Elitserien in July 2012 .

In the summer of 2013 he joined the Anaheim Ducks , but could not prevail in their season preparation and then returned to Sweden to play another season at MODO Hockey. There the defender was on the ice in 12 games before his contract was terminated prematurely in February 2017 due to persistent injury problems.
