Giovanni Battista Grillo

Giovanni Battista Grillo (also Gianbattisto Grillo * around 1570 in Venice ; † November 1622 there ) was an Italian organist and composer .

Life

Nothing certain is known about Grillo's youth and education, but it is proven that he was a student of Claudio Monteverdi in Venice . Grillo was first mentioned in August 1612, on the occasion of his appointment as organist in the ecclesiastical Venetian brotherhood Scuola Grande di San Rocco . In 1615 he became organist at the Church of S. Madonna dell'Orto . In December 1619 he received the prestigious post of first organist at San Marco , with an annual salary of 120 ducats. However, there is no conclusive evidence that Grillo was supposed to have worked at the Bavarian court orchestra for a few years around 1615. As a composer, Grillo adhered to the strict polyphonic technique of Giovanni Gabrieli , since the students of Monteverdi and their master had to refuse to imitate his master for the sake of better chances of success.
