Špaček has been working as an assistant coach at his home club HC Plzeň 1929 since 2012 , and has also been in charge of the Czech national team in the same role since 2013.
Career
Jaroslav Špaček began his career at TJ Rokycany , for whose junior teams he played until 1992. He then moved to HC Plzeň , for which he played until 1997 and quickly established himself in the squad. At the age of 23 he moved to Sweden for Färjestad BK , after he had scored 38 points in 52 games in the 1996/97 season and was thus the best defender in terms of points in the league as well as the third-best scorer within the team. With the Färjestad BK reached Špaček the playoffs of the Elitserien , where he contributed 26 scorer points in the main round. In the final round, Färjestad defeated the HV71 and Leksands IF 3-2 and met the Luleå HF in the final . The latter was defeated with 3-1 victories, so that the season ended with winning the Swedish championship . Because of this success and Špaček's personal achievements, the National Hockey League became aware of him. In the 1998 NHL Entry Draft he was now 24 years old and selected and signed by the Florida Panthers in the fifth round as 117th.
After two successful years in Florida, he moved to the Chicago Blackhawks at the beginning of his third NHL season . But before the end of the second season there, the journey continued to the Columbus Blue Jackets . The NHL strike season 2004/05 he spent again in Plzeň and at HC Slavia Prague . Back in North America, he was signed again in Chicago, but transferred to the Edmonton Oilers in January 2006 in exchange for Tony Salmelainen . With the Oilers he reached the Stanley Cup final against the Carolina Hurricanes , which was lost after seven games. In total, he scored three goals and eleven assists in the play-offs.
On July 5, 2006, Špaček signed a three-year contract with the Buffalo Sabers , which earned him a total salary of approximately ten million US dollars. In the 2006/07 season Špaček reached the playoff final of the Eastern Conference with the Sabers . In December 2007 Špaček was assistant captain of the Sabers and team captain in January 2008. In the 2008/09 season , Špaček set a new personal record with 45 scorer points in 80 games this season.
On July 1, 2009, after his contract with the Sabers had expired, Špaček was signed for three years by the Canadiens de Montréal , in which he earned a total of 11.5 million US dollars.
In December 2011, the Canadiens de Montréal transferred him to the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for Tomáš Kaberle , where he ended his career in November 2012. He was then hired as an assistant coach from HC Škoda Plzeň . During the 2013 playoffs , Špaček returned to the ice for three games and won the Czech championship with his new club .
In 2016 Jaroslav Špaček was inducted into the Czech Ice Hockey Hall of Fame .
International
Špaček represented his home country both in the junior and senior sector on the international stage. The defender made his only international appearance in the junior division at the 1994 Junior World Cup . Špaček scored two goals in seven games and finished fifth with the Czechs at the end of the tournament .
For the seniors selection of defensive specialist first played in the 1998 Winter Olympics in the Japanese Nagano . After a narrow final victory over the Russian selection , Špaček won the gold medal. The then strong Czech team - with the defender in the squad - had further tournament successes at the World Championships in 1999 and 2001 . This was followed by the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City , the world championships in 2002 , 2003 and 2004 and the World Cup of Hockey 2004 , which the Czechs always finished outside of the medal ranks. It was not until the 2005 World Cup that Špaček succeeded in celebrating his third world title. He made his last international appearance at the 2006 Winter Olympics in the Italian Turin .
