George Benjamin Luks (born August 13, 1867 in Williamsport , Pennsylvania , † October 29, 1933 in New York City ) was an American portrait and genre painter . He was a member of the Ashcan School .

Life

Luks was the son of Central European immigrants. His father was a doctor, his mother a hobby painter and musician.

After a trip through Europe , during which he studied with Heinrich Lauenstein at the Düsseldorf Art Academy in 1888/89 , he returned to the United States in 1894 and became an illustrator for the Philadelphia Press . At this time he made the acquaintance of John French Sloan , Robert Henri , William Glackens and Everett Shinn .

In 1896 he moved to New York . He was a member of the artist group The Eight, founded in 1908, and took part in the Armory Show in 1913 . Luks taught at the Art Students League of New York for many years . One of his best-known students is Norman Raeben .
