Norman Raeben

Norman Raeben (* 1901 in the Russian Empire ; † December 12, 1978 ) was an American painter .

He was the youngest of six children of the Yiddish-speaking writer Sholem Alejchem , whose most famous character Tevye the milkman provided the template for the musical Anatevka . The stage name Raeben is probably based on his family name Rabinowitsch.

Raeben moved with his family to New York City in 1914 . He studied painting with Robert Henri , George Luks and John French Sloan , all of whom belonged to the Ashcan School . His studio is on the 11th floor of Carnegie Hall .

His most famous students include Bob Dylan , Bernice Sokol Kramer , Carolyn Schlam, and Rosalyn Jacobs .
