European Church Music Festival

The European Church Music Festival ( EKM for short ) has been held annually in July and August in Schwäbisch Gmünd since 1989 . The festival is very attractive with 12,000-15,000 visitors annually. The programs cover a musical repertoire from the Middle Ages to the present day . In addition to international ensembles, young talents will be performing. There are also competitions for the composition of sacred music and organ improvisation , commissioned compositions and world premieres. In 2010 the festival was awarded a prize for its “creativity and innovation” by the initiative of the federal government, German business and Deutsche Bank Germany - Land of Ideas .

The venues are mainly located in the city center of Schwäbisch Gmünd, but outstanding church buildings in the vicinity also serve as venues for the festival every year.

European Church Music Prize

On the occasion of this festival, the city of Schwäbisch Gmünd has been awarding the European Church Music Prize to high-ranking composers and performers every year since 1999 .

International competition for organ improvisation

The organ of the final round in the Heilig-Kreuz-Münster

The international competition for organ improvisation takes place every two years as part of the festival in Schwäbisch Gmünd and is considered the only permanent competition of its kind in Germany. The final round takes place regularly at the Klais organ of the Heilig-Kreuz-Münster . Since 2013, the first prize of the competition has been awarded as the Hubert Beck Prize , in honor of the deceased co-founder of the festival and long-time jury member Hubert Beck .

Composition competition for contemporary sacred music

The composition competition for contemporary sacred music alternates with a composition commission every two years as part of the festival. A jury assesses the submitted pieces anonymously and awards the prize, currently endowed with 2500 euros, to one of the composers. The premiere of the award-winning piece is part of the festival's program. The pieces submitted come from all over the world, in 2010 from Europe , America and Australia .
