Philippe Lefebvre (organist)

Philippe Lefebvre (born January 2, 1949 in Roubaix ) is a French organist.

Life

Lefebvre began his career as an organist in Marcq-en-Barœul . On the recommendation of Pierre Cochereau , he studied from the age of 16 at the Conservatory of Lille and later at the Conservatoire national supérieur de musique et de danse de Paris organ, improvisation and composition. At the age of 19 he was appointed titular organist at Arras Cathedral; a few months later Lefebvre gave his first concert at the Notre-Dame de Paris cathedral . In 1971 he won first prizes in organ playing and improvisation at the Paris Conservatory, and later first prizes in counterpoint and fugue . Lefebvre also won the "Prix de la Fondation de la Vocation" in 1972, the first prize in the improvisation field at the international organ competition in Lyon and the great prize in improvisation at the international organ competition in Chartres . In 1976 he was appointed titular organist at Chartres Cathedral.

Philippe Lefebvre has been titular organist at the Notre-Dame de Paris Cathedral since 1985, as has Olivier Latry and Vincent Dubois . He is also primarily responsible for church music at Notre Dame de Paris, which includes rehearsals with the choir school, the training of professional singers and all other musical activities.

From 1980 to 2003 Lefebvre was director of the Lille Conservatory. Since 2002 he has been teaching organ improvisation at the Conservatoire de Paris .
