The main organ of the Notre-Dame de Paris cathedral currently has 117 registers on five manuals and pedal and is based on an organ by Aristide Cavaillé-Coll from 1868. The choir organ was built in 1969 and comprises 30 registers on two manuals and pedal.

Building history

The medieval organ, built by Friedrich Schambantz , existed from 1403 to 1730 and was replaced by Francois Thierry's classic new structure from 1730 to 1838 . At the time of Eugène Viollet-le-Duc , the organ was largely rebuilt by Aristide Cavaillé-Coll from 1863–1868 using earlier pipe material. In 1904 Charles Mutin carried out an expansion of the disposition ; In 1924 the organ received an electric fan; Further work (including changing the arrangement of the manuals in the console, changing the mixtur compositions and eliminating the differentiated wind pressures between bass and treble in the manuals) was carried out in 1932 by Joseph Beuchet. In 1959, the game and register action (with Barker machines), which had been largely preserved until then, was electrified by Jean Hermann , and the disposition was increasingly changed in the following years by Robert Boisseau (including three chamade registers in 1968 (8 ′, 4 ′ and 2 ′ / 1 ′) added) and other work carried out from 1975 by Jean-Loup Boisseau. After the setter system was shut down in autumn 1983 (due to the risk of short circuits and fire), the organ was fundamentally overhauled and expanded from 1990 to 1992 by the companies Jean-Loup Boisseau, Bertrand Cattiaux, Philippe Émeriau, Michel Giroud and the Société Synaptel. The register slides, pedal and manual keyboards as well as the pistons and balancing steps from Jean Hermann's console were reused. Between 2012 and 2014 the organ was extensively restored, cleaned and rebuilt by the organ builders Bertrand Cattiaux and Pascal Quoirin. The keyboard and register action were overhauled, a new console was built (using the stops, the pedal keyboard, the balance steps and the pistons of the Jean Hermann console), and a new swellable part of the work was added ("Résonnance expressive", from the former small pedal from Boisseau, which can be freely assigned to each manual and pedal), the case and the front pipes restored and a general tuning carried out.

After the fire in Notre-Dame in Paris in 2019 , the main organ was soiled by soot and dust and in places affected by extinguishing water, but it is otherwise undamaged. Its good condition can be explained by the low 17 ° C that prevailed inside the organ during the fire. Due to damage to the gallery, the organ has been dismantled since August 2020 and is expected to be overhauled by an organ builder to be determined by 2024.

Building history

Since 1839 there was also a choir organ in Notre-Dame . Today's instrument near the transept was built in 1969 by Robert Boisseau with 28 stops (2 manuals / pedal, mechanical performance and electrical stop action). In 1970 a flute 16 ′ was added in the pedal (outside the case), in 1978 a Bourdon 16 ′ in the first manual. Further work by Boisseau followed in 1981 and 1989, including the replacement of the Chalumeau 4 ′ in the pedal with a Clairon 4 ′ and the installation of a setting system. In 2005 there was a general cleaning by Philippe Guyonnet and a general intonation by Bertrand Cattiaux. Since then it has had 30 registers.

The choir organ was almost destroyed by a fire in 2019.
