Félix Danjou

Jean-Louis-Félix Danjou (born June 21, 1812 in Paris , † March 4, 1866 in Montpellier ) was a French organist, composer and musicologist.

Danjou studied at the Conservatoire de Paris with François Benoist and had organ lessons with the organist of the Saint-Gervais church , Jean-Nicolas Marrigues . In 1830 he became organist at the Notre-Dame-des-Blancs-Manteaux church , and in 1834 at Saint-Eustache . From 1840 to 1847 he worked as an organist at the Notre-Dame de Paris cathedral , where he was best known for his efforts to reform church music. In 1845 he founded the Revue de la musique religieuse, populaire et classique with François-Joseph Fétis , Stéphen Morelot and Jean-Joseph Bonaventure Laurens .

After study trips to France, Belgium and Germany, he became artistic director of the organ building company Daublaine-Callinet . In 1848 he withdrew from his musical activities and went first to Marseille, later to Montpellier, where he directed the magazine Messager du Midi .

Danjou composed church music works, including several masses, a Tantum Ergo, motets and organ works. As a result of his research in the Bibliothèque Royale , he published an extensive collection of texts on French history. He also wrote pamphlets on libraries and organ building and was a collaborator in the Encyclopédie du XIXe siècle and the Dictionnaire de la Convention .
