Louis-Claude Daquin

Louis-Claude Daquin (or d'Acquin ), (born July 4, 1694 in Paris , † June 15, 1772 ibid) was a French composer of the Baroque . He was a virtuoso organist and harpsichordist .

Live and act

Louis-Claude Daquin was considered a musical child prodigy. After a few harpsichord lessons he was able to perform with his godmother, Élisabeth Jacquet de La Guerre , at the age of six before Louis XIV . Louis Marchand became his organ teacher. He received composition lessons from Nicolas Bernier , and at the age of only eight he led the performance of his own motet Beatus Vir for large choir and orchestra in the Sainte-Chapelle . At twelve, he turned down the post of organist at the Sainte-Chapelle and instead accepted the same offer at the Le Petit Saint-Antoine monastery . In 1727 he became organist at the parish church of Saint-Paul , where he was preferred to Jean-Philippe Rameau . Five years later he became organist in the Cordeliers , in 1739 succeeding Jean-François Dandrieu , organist of the Chapelle Royale. After the death of Antoine Calvière he followed this in 1755 as organist of the Notre Dame de Paris cathedral . In addition to these important positions as organist, he appeared several times in concerts at the Concert spirituel between 1749 and 1754 .

Daquin was considered an outstanding organ improviser of his generation in his day.

His son Pierre-Louis D'Aquin de Château-Lyon described in his " Lettres Sur Les Hommes Celebres ..... Sous Le Regne De Louis XV ... " 1752 the brilliant career of his father, who was valued in Paris.

Much of Daquin's work has been lost. His Pièces des Clavecin (1735) with four harpsichord suites, his Nouveau Livre de Noëls (1757) with twelve Christmas carol variations , a cantata and the Air à Boire have been preserved . Daquin's most famous works are Noël X and XII (Noël Suisse , Swiss Christmas carol) and Le Coucou for harpsichord.
