The Noëls variés (French; for example: “ Variations on Christmas carols ”) for organ (and also other keyboard instruments) are a specifically French musical genre, the first examples of which date back to the 17th century , but whose tradition is certainly older.

These are pieces whose themes are taken from popular Christmas carol melodies and which are varied in improvisations according to various variation techniques (melodic, rhythmic, timbre, etc.) and are played in Advent and Christmas. They were also played in private, on the harpsichord and at the end of the 18th century on the fortepiano (the composer Claude Balbastre, for example, assigned his own Noëls to this instrument ).

The first collection comes from Nicolas Gigault (1682), followed by those from composers such as Nicolas Lebègue , André Raison , Pierre and Jean-François Dandrieu , Louis-Claude Daquin , Claude Balbastre , Michel Corrette , Josse-François-Joseph Benaut , Jean- Jacques Beauvarlet-Charpentier and Guillaume Lasceux .

Some composers of the 19th and 20th centuries wrote Noëls variés, or pieces inspired by the birth of Christ , including Alexandre-Pierre-François Boëly , Isaac-François Lefébure-Wely , James Alfred Lefébure-Wély , César Franck , Eugène Gigout , Théodore Dubois , Alexandre Guilmant , Charles Tournemire , Marcel Dupré , Joseph Noyon , Jean Langlais , Pierre Camonin , Pierre Pincemaille and Olivier Messiaen .

Popular works come from, for example, Louis-Claude Daquin (1694–1772) and Marcel Dupré (1886–1971) (based on the song Noël nouvelet ).

For example, one volume in the Orgue et Liturgie series (Volume 40) is headed Noëls variés , while another of the series (Volume 16) contains the Noëls variés by Nicolas Lebègue.
