André (Édouard Antoine Marie) Fleury (born July 25, 1903 in Neuilly-sur-Seine , † August 6, 1995 in Le Vésinet ) was a French composer , pianist , organist and music teacher .

Life

André Fleury received his organizational training first as a private student of Henri Letocart , a student of César Franck , and later from André Marchal and Louis Vierne . At the Conservatoire de Paris Fleury was accepted into the organ class of Eugène Gigout and finally received a first prize in organ playing and improvisation with Gigout's successor Marcel Dupré in 1926. At the same time he studied composition with Paul Vidal . From 1920 Fleury was Eugène Gigout's assistant at the Paris Church of St. Augustin, and, in the same capacity, in Ste. Clotilde (for Charles Tournemire ). In 1930 he was appointed titular organist at St. Augustin, and in 1941 he was also appointed professor at the École Normale de Musique in Paris. After the end of the Second World War, Fleury and his wife left Paris for health reasons and settled in Dijon . In 1949 he succeeded Émile Poillot as titular organist at the cathedral and as professor of piano (later also organ) at the Dijon Conservatory. In 1971, at the invitation of Jean Guillou, he was appointed co-titular organist at St. Eustache in Paris and at the same time received a professorship for organ at the Schola Cantorum and the appointment as titular organist at the Cathedral in Versailles . André Fleury died in Le Vésinay in 1995 at the age of 92 and was buried in Arcy-sur-Cure.

As a composer, Fleury wrote numerous works for organ, many of which, however, have not yet been published. His career as a concert organist took him across Europe. He gave the first performances of the organ sonata by Darius Milhaud , the Scherzo op.2 by Maurice Duruflé , and the organ cycle La Nativité du Seigneur by Olivier Messiaen (after the world premiere by Jean Langlais , Daniel-Lesur and Jean-Jacques Grunenwald in Paris in 1935). Bernard Gavoty, Pierre Cochereau and Daniel-Lesur were among his most famous students .
