Jean Guillou (2014)

Jean Victor Arthur Guillou (born April 18, 1930 in Angers - † January 26, 2019 in Paris ) was a French composer , organist , pianist and music teacher .

Life

After autodidactic studies in piano and organ, Jean Guillou became organist at the age of 12 at the Saint-Serge church in his hometown of Angers . From 1945 to 1954 he studied at the Paris Conservatory , where his teachers included Marcel Dupré , Maurice Duruflé and Olivier Messiaen . During his studies in 1952, Guillou played the world premiere of his organ version of Johann Sebastian Bach's musical sacrifice in the Erskine and American United Church in Montreal ( Canada ) . From 1955 to 1958, Guillou taught as a professor for organ at the Pontifício Instituto de Música Sacra in Lisbon ( Portugal ). It was during this time that Guillou's first compositions were written (Fantaisie op. 1, Colloque No. 1 and parts of Colloque No. 2).

In 1958, Guillou underwent long-term treatment for an asthma and tuberculosis disease at the Heckeshorn Lung Clinic in Berlin , gave up his job in Lisbon and settled in Lindenallee in Berlin-Westend until 1963 . During this time he not only composed numerous compositions, but also made his first recordings in the Luther Church and in St. Matthias in Berlin-Schöneberg . He also got to know the composer Max Baumann , who wrote his first organ works for Guillou in 1962 (Invocation op.67 no.5, Trois pièces brèves op.67 no.6, Psalmi op.67 no.2) January 1963 were premiered in St. Matthias von Guillou. In 1963 he was appointed titular organist at the Paris church of Saint-Eustache as the successor to André Marchal . On April 22, 1966 Guillou made his debut in the newly built Berlin Philharmonic , where he held a concert commemorating the 50th anniversary of Max Reger its fantasy and fugue played on BACH op. 46th On October 6th of the same year Guillou played the world premiere of his organ work Pour le Tombeau de Colbert in the Berlin Philharmonic . On the recommendation of his friend Karl Richter , Guillou became a lecturer in organ and improvisation at the Zurich master classes in 1970, where he taught until 2005. On May 11, 1979, he married the Hispanic Suzanne Varga.

As a concert organist and improviser, Jean Guillou appeared worldwide. He has also given concerts as a pianist, playing the British and French premieres of Julius Reubke's piano sonata . His involvement in organ building led to the conception of numerous instruments, including La Grange de la Besnardière in Villedômer ( Kleuker , 1974), Notre-Dame des Neiges in L'Alpe d'Huez (Kleuker, 1978), Notre-Dame des Grâces, Chant d ' Oiseau in Brussels (Kleuker, 1981), Tonhalle in Zurich (Kleuker / Steinmeyer , 1988), Saint-Eustache in Paris ( Van den Heuvel , 1989), Naples Conservatory (Tamburini / Zanin, 2006), Auditorio de Tenerife (Blancafort, 2004 ), Sant'Antonio dei Portoghesi in Rome ( Mascioni , 2008) and León ( Cathedral , Klais , 2013). One of his concepts concerned the "organ with variable structure" ("Orgue à structure variable") with nine modules that can be freely set up, transported in vehicles and even in airplanes, and played from a four-manual console. This project has not yet been put into practice.

In addition to his extensive and varied compositional oeuvre, Guillou has created numerous transcriptions of orchestral and piano works for organ. These include works by Handel , Liszt , Mozart , Mussorgsky , Prokofiev , Rachmaninov , Stravinsky , Tchaikovsky and Vivaldi as well as organ versions of the Goldberg Variations and the Musical Offering by Johann Sebastian Bach .

Many of his compositions are based on Guillou's own texts and poems; He has also published several books that have also been translated into German and Italian: L'Orgue - Souvenir et Avenir (1978), La Musique et le Geste (2012) and Le Visiteur, Poèmes (2014).

In 2010 Guillou was to be awarded the French Order of Merit of Knights of the Legion of Honor ; he turned down this award on the grounds that France paid too little attention to classical music. On September 22nd, 2014, after 51 years at Saint-Eustache in Paris, Guillou received the title "Organiste titulaire émérite" and served until Holy Week 2015. In July 2015, he became an honorary professor at the Saar School of Music in Saarbrücken appointed. In March 2018, Guillou was awarded the RCO Medal by the Royal College of Organists at Southwark Cathedral in London for his outstanding performance as a performer and composer ("in recognition of distinguished achievement in organ playing and composition"). In May 2018 he was still in Koper as a technical advisor , where the organ of the Tonhalle Zurich , which he designed in 1988, will be transferred to the cathedral and inaugurated in 2020.

Guillou was active as a concert organist into old age, including on April 18, 2018 in the Hamburg Elbphilharmonie , on September 6 of the same year in the Oratoire du Louvre (his last concert in Paris), and on October 21, 2018 in St. Michael in Munich (his last public concert). Jean Guillou died on January 26, 2019 at the age of 88 in Paris; the Requiem took place on February 5, 2019 in Notre-Dame Cathedral . His grave is in the Père Lachaise cemetery (Chemin du Quinconce, D1 / 4547).
