The Toccata for Organ ( Toccata pour Orgue ), Opus 9, is an early work by the French composer Jean Guillou shortly before his appointment as titular organist at the parish church of Saint-Eustache in Paris in 1963. It is one of his most frequently played Works that are performed both in concerts and competitions. The piece, at times highly complex, is centered around three themes, the individual character of which causes a progressive increase in tension. The composer relies on the melodic flexibility and percussive power of the organ, which give the work a character that is "both tragic and fiery". The fiery virtuoso work after various resting points in repeated attempts forms a strong contrast to the more pleasing toccatas from the tradition of French organ romanticism.
