Southwark Cathedral or The Cathedral and Collegiate Church of St Savior and St Mary Overie is the on the south bank of the Thames in London district of Southwark built Anglican Cathedral . The church building, which is kept in Gothic style , essentially dates from the period from 1220 to 1420. It was not made a bishop's church until 1905.

history

There is already a reference to the church in the Domesday Book from 1086. The fact that a monastery already existed here in 606 is controversial. Thomas Becket is said to have preached here a few days before his murder.

The church fell victim to several fires, for example in 1212 and at the end of the 14th century. It served as the burial place of famous writers, such as John Gower and John Fletcher . From the church tower, Wenceslaus Hollar designed his “Long View of London” from 1638, a well-known panorama.

The nave was redesigned by Sir Arthur Blomfield as part of the establishment of the Archdiocese in 1895. In 1988 the building was completely renovated.

Outside the cathedral is a memorial to Mahomet Weyonomon, the sachem (chief) of the Mohegan tribe who came to London in 1735 to ask King George II for justice for his tribe, who were besieged by British settlers. He died of smallpox in 1736 before the commission appointed by the king heard his case. He was buried in an unmarked grave in Southwark at a nocturnal funeral that was not in keeping with tribal tradition. In 2006, Queen Elizabeth II donated the monument, carved out of a pink granite rock by British artist Peter Randall-Page. Members of the Mohegan tribe performed a traditional burial ceremony there.
