The Heckeshorn Lung Clinic is a lung clinic in the Berlin district of Wannsee in the Steglitz-Zehlendorf district , named after the Heckeshorn on the Großer Wannsee . Today it is a center for pulmonology and thoracic surgery . The clinic was founded in 1947 as a tuberculosis hospital on Wannsee, near the Alsen colony , and has been part of the Helios Clinic Emil von Behring since 2004 . With 210 beds (40 in the thoracic surgery area and 20 in pediatrics ) and around 16,000 inpatient and outpatient treatments per year, the clinic is the largest center for pulmonology and thoracic surgery in the Berlin-Brandenburg region.

In April 2012, the clinic took its 65th anniversary as an opportunity to reopen its historical library and to present the former Medical Director and long-time Secretary General of the German Central Committee for Combating Tuberculosis at a festive event. V. (DZK), Robert Loddenkemper , to honor. A commemorative publication accessible on the Internet brings together a bibliography of all publications that have been produced at the clinic over the past 65 years on over 200 pages.

history

The tuberculosis epidemic rampant after the Second World War , which affected 65,000 people in Berlin alone, was the reason for the establishment of the Heckeshorn Tuberculosis Hospital on April 1, 1947. The clinic was located on the grounds of the former Reich Air Defense School , consisting of several clinker buildings and wooden barracks, which were converted into reclining halls and later replaced by low-rise buildings. The clinic consisted of four clinical departments ( diagnostics , internal medicine , surgery , pediatrics) as well as a central laboratory for microbiology , a clinical-chemical laboratory and the institutes for radiology and pathology .

A bunker built in the 1940s with its own transmitter mast system , which enabled wireless telephone connections to West Germany during the blockade in 1948/1949 ( Berlin Airlift ), still stands on the site at Heckeshorn . Initially the pathology department was housed in the bunker , later it served as a storage room and as an emergency hospital with ABC protection .

The first medical director in Heckeshorn was Karl Auersbach (1946–1963), followed by Karl Ludwig Radenbach (1964–1983), Robert Loddenkemper (1983–2005) and Dirk Kaiser (since 2006).

Focus

Heckeshorn was one of the most important tuberculosis hospitals in West Berlin , along with the Havelhöhe and Hohengatow hospitals, and had good contacts with the American occupying forces. This made it possible for the hospital to be the first clinic in Berlin to have access to the antibiotic streptomycin , which was used for the first time in the USA and was the most effective drug against tuberculosis at the time.

Tuberculosis control is still a focus of the Heckeshorn Lung Clinic, but since the early 1960s Heckeshorn has developed into a specialist lung clinic for all pneumological diseases. In 1964, under the direction of Karl Ludwig Radenbach , Heckeshorn was the first clinic in Germany to introduce the Anglo-American department system, which aimed at the close interdisciplinary exchange of all independently managed departments of the clinic and was a novelty in the otherwise strictly hierarchical hospital structure at the time depicted. The core of this concept was regular patient presentations and technical discussions of all departments in joint clinical conferences in order to coordinate and improve diagnostics and therapy.

The Heckeshorn Lung Clinic can show some pioneering achievements: endobronchial radiotherapy with cobalt , carried out for the first time by Hans-Jürgen Brandt, later endobronchial laser in combination with brachytherapy, perthoracic implantation of radio gold seeds by Günter Freise, the introduction of thoracic cytology , the development of diagnostic thoracoscopy (Hans-Jürgen Brandt, Jutta Mai, Robert Loddenkemper), the first night-time home ventilation in Germany for chronic respiratory insufficiency in 1983, the initiation of multicenter studies and the establishment of the Scientific Working Group for the Therapy of Lung Diseases e. V. (WATL, 1964).

From 1996 to 2009 the Heckeshorn Lung Clinic was also home to the German Central Committee for Combating Tuberculosis (DZK), which is now in the immediate vicinity of the capital office of the German Society for Pneumology .

After several carrier changes, Heckeshorn has been part of Helios Kliniken GmbH since 2004 . In 2007 the clinic - accompanied by strong protests against a feared closure, in the course of which the Friends of the Heckeshorn Lung Clinic was founded - found its new location on the premises of the Helios Clinic Emil von Behring, but continues its name “Heckeshorn Lung Clinic”.

Pneumology Clinic

The Clinic for Pneumology has been headed by Torsten Bauer since 2006. It includes the center for sleep and respiratory medicine (weaning), a palliative ward , a contact point for inpatient and outpatient care for patients with tuberculosis and non-tuberculous mycobacteriosis, a central contact point for outpatients and the district advice center for patients with tumors of the respiratory organs (Tumor counseling). Further specialties are infectious diseases (with our own immune laboratory) with a focus on pneumonia and exacerbations of COPD , allergology, the diagnosis and treatment of pleural effusions and pulmonary fibrosis as well as rarer lung diseases such as sarcoid or Langerhans cell histiocytosis. The clinic also has an interventional endoscopy and a modern lung function laboratory. After the radiation clinic opened, the full range of therapies for lung cancer and other intrathoracic tumors is now available.

The Pneumological Practice Days take place regularly in spring at the Heckeshorn Lung Clinic, organized by the Federal Association of Pneumologists (BdP), the Federal Association of Pediatric Pneumology. V. (BAPP) and the Association of Pneumological Assistants (VPAD).

Thoracic Surgery Clinic

From 1985 to 2013, the Clinic for Thoracic Surgery was headed by Dirk Kaiser, who was succeeded on May 1, 2013 by Joachim Pfannschmidt, who previously worked at the Thoracic Clinic of the Heidelberg University Hospital . Most lung cancer operations in the Berlin / Brandenburg area are performed in the Heckeshorn Lung Clinic. The lethality rate in operations is 1.4 percent and thus has one of the lowest death rates in an international comparison. Other specialties are metastasis surgery with the laser, the treatment of pneumothorax and pleural empyema.

Clinic for Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine

Heckeshorn is one of the few lung clinics in Germany with its own children's department : The Clinic for Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine - Pediatric Pneumology and Allergology under the direction of Michael Barker - has a special cystic fibrosis consultation hour and a children's rescue center.

The Institute for Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology, the Institute for Microbiology, Immunology and Laboratory Medicine as well as the Institute for Pathology and the Institute for Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging (PET Center Berlin-Süd) are affiliated to the three clinical areas.

Since April 2009 the Heckeshorn Lung Clinic has been a certified lung cancer center , a certified thoracic surgery center and a clinical center for infectious diseases.
