history

The conservatory is one of the most traditional musical training centers in the world. It goes back to the four famous conservatories of the city, which were founded in the 16th century: " Santa Maria di Loreto ", " Pietà dei Turchini ", " Sant'Onofrio a Capuana " and " Poveri di Gesù Cristo ". They were originally orphanages , but in the 17th and 18th centuries they were so famous as musical training centers that they later became a model for other conservatories of the same name in other places. They were also directly related to the development of an own n-style opera in the 18th century, the so-called Neapolitan School .

In its current form, the institution was re-established in 1808 as Real Collegio di Musica and, by order of King Francesco I , moved into its current seat in the former convent next to the eponymous church of San Pietro a Majella with the designation Reale Conservatorio di Musica di San Pietro a Majella Majella .

The conservatory also has a very rich library with a wide variety of historical documents. The only known harp made by Antonio Stradivari is in the associated museum .
