Alessandro Longo (born December 31, 1864 in Amantea ( Cosenza ), Italy , † November 3, 1945 in Naples ) was an Italian composer and musicologist .

After studying at the Naples Conservatory , he became a piano teacher there from 1887 and director in 1944.

As a composer he successfully managed to combine the thorough German instrumental notation with the Italian vocal tradition.

Today he is mainly known for his comprehensive edition of Domenico Scarlatti's piano works . He provided all 544 piano sonatas with numbers ( longo numbers ), which served to identify them for many years. The Longo numbering has largely been replaced by that of Ralph Kirkpatrick .
