Gilles Cantagrel (born November 20, 1937 in Paris ) is a French musicologist.

Life

Cantagrel studied physics, art history and music at the École normal de musique de Paris . He played the organ and led choirs. He later turned to journalism and wrote for the music magazines Harmonie and Diapason.

From 1984 to 1987 Cantagrel was Program Director of France Musique . In addition to his work as musical advisor to the France Musique directorate, he was also Vice-President of the Music Commission of the Union Européenne de Radiodiffusion et télévision.

Cantagrel has also frequently appeared as a presenter at concerts on television and radio. He wrote a television series about the history of the organ in Europe. In 1985 he took part in the founding of the Musicora music exhibition.

Gilles Cantagrel is chairman of the Association des Grandes Orgues de Chartres and board member of several institutions, such as the Center de Musique Baroque de Versailles , and a member of the board of trustees of the Leipzig Bach Archive. In 2001 he was appointed a member of the National Celebration Committee by the French Ministry of Culture.

Publications

Cantagrel wrote monographs on Johann Sebastian Bach , Georg Philipp Telemann and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart . He is editor of the organ music guide Guide de la musique d'orgue (Paris, 1991).
