Yann Arthus-Bertrand (born March 13, 1946 in Paris ) is a French photographer , journalist , reporter and environmentalist . He works as a photo journalist in the field of sports and nature. His spectacular aerial photographs in books and films made him internationally known.

Life

Yann Arthus-Bertrand comes from a family of medalists and jewelers. At first he worked as an assistant director and also appeared as an actor in two feature films (1965 and 1970). In 1976, the qualified biologist, who had managed an animal park in France, lived with his wife Anne for three years in the Kenyan Masai Mara National Park to take photographs of the life of a lion family. In order to be able to finance these behavioral studies, he rented the hot-air balloon used for observation purposes to tourists and discovered his passion for photography from a bird's eye view . Further photo reports followed, he took part in a total of ten car rallies Paris-Dakar , the tennis tournaments of the French Open , the annual Salon international de l'agriculture in Paris and also photographed the zoologist Dian Fossey with the mountain gorillas in Rwanda.

Arthus-Bertrand publishes in internationally renowned magazines such as Paris Match , Le Figaro Magazine , stern , Geo , Airone , Life and National Geographic . For the first time in decades, he used the perspective "from above" in an illustrated book about Paris.

Commitment to environmental protection

1993 Arthus-Bertrand started from the UNESCO -sponsored project Earth from above ( Earth from Above ), a photographic and cinematic inventory of the earth. He had a selection of these pictures exhibited outdoors on the boulevards of Paris. The large-format pictures, some of which were attached to the wrought-iron fences of the Jardin de Luxembourg , were also illuminated at night. Conceived as a traveling exhibition , these recordings were shown in 110 cities.

In 2004 the corresponding, almost one-hour film, The Earth from Above, by director Renaud Delourme, was released.

In 2005 Arthus-Bertrand founded the non-governmental organization GoodPlanet , an environmental organization that was converted into a foundation in 2009 . Aside from various information campaigns about environmental protection, Arthus-Bertrand launched two main projects:

  • The Action Carbone project enables societies, institutions and individuals to calculate and offset their greenhouse gas emissions.
  • In the internet project 7 Billion Others , Arthus-Bertrand is concerned, in addition to his previous pictorial representations of the interaction between man and nature, now also to let people have their say, especially with regard to their - essential for behavior towards nature - Life experiences, ideas, fears, hopes and wishes. To this end, he and six other cameramen filmed around 6,000 people (around 1 ppm of the world population) in 75 countries over the course of four years (2003–2007)  answering forty identical questions, such as: For example: “What did you learn from your parents?” “What do you want to pass on to your children?” “What tests did you have to pass?” “What does love mean to you?”, “What is war, in your opinion ? ”Or“ What do you think happens after death? ”. Many of the corresponding answers can be viewed on the Internet in the form of short videos - translated into French or English depending on the language selected.

2009 his biggest movie came home (meaning "our home, the earth"), the first fully filmed from the air world documentary in feature length , of a commitment to nature conservation is understood and as a " tribute to Mother Earth." What Arthus-Bertrand actually wants to show with this documentary is the change, the deformation and the destruction of the planet by humans. Like Al Gore - with his film An Inconvenient Truth  - Arthus-Bertrand is also convinced that film is the right medium to shake people up and make them aware of this. In order to be able to achieve this goal as far as possible, Arthus-Bertrand insisted from the start that the film should be freely available to everyone after completion without film rights - especially on the Internet.
