Paris Match is a weekly French magazine. It was founded in 1949 and has since been known for its motto Le poids des mots, le choc des photos (in German The weight of words, the shock of images ).

history

Paris Match was founded in 1949 by the entrepreneur Jean Prouvost . The magazine got its name from the weekly Match , which was taken over by Jean Prouvost in 1938. The following year, he converted the former sports newspaper into a news magazine. During the Second World War was match out of print. The newspaper did not appear again until 1949, albeit under the new name Paris Match. The American magazine Life used the format of the new newspaper as a model: They wanted to combine current information with reports and exclusive photos. The first Paris Match appeared on March 25, 1949 with Winston Churchill on the cover.

Paris Match was a huge success until the late 1950s. But then sales fell continuously due to growing competition and the advent of television. The circulation fell from 800,000 copies in 1958 to less than 600,000 in 1975.

In 1976 the magazine was taken over by Daniel Filipacchi . Roger Thérond was again editor-in-chief, which he was from 1962 to 1968. He stayed that way until 1999. Under his leadership, Paris Match became more successful again and the circulation rose again.

Paris Match is still owned by the Hachette Filipacchi Médias group, which belongs to Lagardère . The circulation is 688,000 copies (2009).

In 2006 the editor-in-chief was fired after a photo of Cécilia Sarkozy with her lover in the meantime appeared on the front page .

In August 2007 the magazine published holiday photos of French President Nicolas Sarkozy in a boat and retouched the love handles on the photos. The weekly newspaper L'Express took this as an opportunity to publish the correct photo. Paris Match said the position of the president in the boat and the incidence of light made the belly fold look exaggerated.
