Nicolas Séjan

Nicolas Séjan (born March 17, 1745 in Paris ; died March 16, 1819 there ) was a French composer and organist .

Live and act

Séjan's family was related to the Forqueray family of musicians . Nicolas learned to play the organ from his uncle Nicolas-Gilles Forqueray (1703–1761), the husband of his aunt Élisabeth Séjan. Nicolas Séjan was considered one of the best organists of his time and was organist at the Notre-Dame de Paris Cathedral and various other Paris churches. He was appointed to the Royal Chapel ( Chapelle royale ) in 1789 as successor to Pierre-Louis Couperin . He lost his office during the French Revolution , but later occupied it again.

Nicolas Séjan was the father of Louis-Nicolas Séjan (1786–1849), his successor at Saint-Sulpice .

Séjan left behind some works for harpsichord , piano and organ , noting his fugue compositions and the Noëls .

He is buried on the Cimetière de Montmartre .
