from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Antoine Calvière (also Guillaume Antoine Calvière ; * around 1695 in Paris ; † April 18, 1755 ibid) was a French organist and composer of the musical baroque .

Live and act

Antoine Calvière was a student of Philippe Isoré (organist at the Abbey of Saint-Denis ) in Paris. As early as 1706, the talented Calvière had applied for the position of organist in the church of Sainte-Madeleine-en-la-Cité, which is why his year of birth, given as 1695, is in some cases questioned, as he was only 11 years old - which, however, was higher Talent in this age would not be uncommon. From 1722 he was organist in the Saint-Germain-des-Prés church . At the same time he played as an organist in Sainte-Marguerite. From 1730 to 1755 he was the organist of the organ in the Notre-Dame Cathedral , from 1739 also in Sainte-Chapelle and (as the successor to Louis Marchand ) in the Chapelle Royal . Calvière composed, taught and was one of the most respected organists of his time. His compositions included organ works and motets . None of it has survived - apart from a piece for organ, which is archived in the library of the Brussels Conservatory.
