The Augustinus Church in Schwäbisch Gmünd is the former Baroque-style monastery church of the Gmünder Augustinerkloster , which is today a Protestant parish church in the city center, in the neighborhood of the Holy Cross Minster .

history

Since 1284, the Augustinian Order of Hermits was allowed by the mayor of Schwäbisch Gmünd to stay in the city, to purchase land and to build on it. It was at this time that the first monastery buildings were started, which were in place from 1308. It is no longer possible to determine exactly when the construction of the church began. It is assumed that first there was a straight choir closure , which was replaced in 1432 by a new choir in its current form. At that time, the Augustine Church was a late Gothic church complex, of which no features are freely visible today. In 1535, Emperor Charles V took quarters in the Augustinian monastery, which at that time consisted of medieval half-timbered buildings. After the church underwent another renovation in 1680, a catastrophic condition of the monastery and the church building was determined as early as 1732, which was confirmed again in 1755 because of the risk of collapse. The new baroque building of the monastery was completed as early as 1747. From 1756 on the renovation work on the church began, which included a partial demolition of the late Gothic church. The construction work was led by Johann Michael Keller , who was the city master builder in Schwäbisch Gmünd at the time. In 1758 the renovation work was completed.

Interior of the Augustine Church

On January 3rd, 1803, the monastery received a decree of repeal, which resulted in the evacuation of the monastery. In 1806 the church was designated as an evangelical garrison church and in 1817 as an evangelical parish church. In 1855, an entrance from Münsterplatz at the apex of the choir was broken through and more seats were created for members of the garrison. The passage was closed again in 1963 as part of a church restoration.

Furnishing

Ceiling fresco in the nave

The choir is decorated both on the walls and on the ceiling, the nave only on the ceiling with frescoes by Johann Anwander . Most of the frescoes show events from the life of St. Augustine . The remaining frescoes refer to other religious saints. Next to the organ is the Storrsche Oratorio. It's a box-shaped box. A magnificent coat of arms of the Storr von Ostrach is emblazoned on the east side of the lodge.

The baroque high altar was created in 1770 by the Augustinian Fidelis Hellwirth together with his brother-in-law Franz Joseph Bergmiller. The figures of saints come from the previous altar and were created around 1700. The side altars and confessionals were moved to Hohenberg and Gotteszell between 1805 and 1810 .

The sound cover of the pulpit , created around 1700 and whose basket dates from 1871, is worth seeing . On the southern choir wall near the pulpit is the epitaph for Philipp Senfft von Sulpurg († February 15, 1515).

The stalls were built in from 1829 to 1835. The choir stalls date from 1750. In the nave, lay benches with rococo cheeks and rich two- or four-span dorsals were set up.

organ

The organ was built in 1964 by the organ builder Richard Rensch (Lauffen / N.). The instrument has 30 stops on two manuals and a pedal . The playing and register actions are mechanical.
